This Suhrawardy Udyan is a vast garden situated in the heart of capital Dhaka. It has an important importance in terms of history and tradition. The former name of the park was Ramna Racecourse Maidan. Horse racing competition was here before independence. One side of the park is the Ramna garden and on the other side Dhaka University campus. The fight for giving Bangla language status to the state language was originally started from this park. On 21 March 1948, the first Governor General of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah declared on this ground "Urdu and only Urdu will be the state language of Pakistan". From then on, language movement was sown. On 7 March 1971 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the hero of Bengal's independence, was proclaiming "Our struggle, this time, is a struggle for our freedom. Our struggle, this time, is a struggle for our independence. Joy Bangla!". It was a de facto declaration of Bangladesh's independence. After winning the war of liberation, Pakistani occupation forces surrendered to the people of Bengal on this field.
